The Making of Medieval England

When the Bayeux Tapestry crosses the Channel this year for public display at the British Museum it may prompt some fresh reflection on the nation’s medieval history and its importance in shaping our society, our sense of identity and of course, our relationship with mainland Europe. In particular, the tapestry reminds us of the apparent dividing line in England’s Middle Ages between the English society of the Saxons and the culture of their Norman Conquerors. In this talk, James Clark, who teaches medieval history at Exeter University, invites us to reconsider what we owe to the pre- and post-Conquest past.
