September’s talk is about a new acquisition of the RAMM – a rare Alfred the Great penny, that was minted in Exeter.
Tom Cadbury tells the remarkable story of this remarkable little coin – and that story includes Topsham. The coin was the first to be struck in Exeter, starting a tradition that continued into the 17th century. Only 3 of these coins are known about making it one of the rarest in the world. The first proper record of it was made by Richard Sainthill, a Topsham numismatist, in 1844.
